Wan Azizah visits poor families

PORT DICKSON: With five days left to campaign for the Port Dickson parliamentary byelection, PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail found time in her busy schedule yesterday to visit several hardcore poor families in Kampung Paya, Bagan Pinang here.

The Deputy Prime Minister who is also Minister of Women, Family and Community Development spent about 30 minutes visiting three hardcore families in the village and listening to their troubles.

A member of one of these families, Zaiton Mihat, 58, said this was the first time a national leader had visited them, and she was excited and touched.

“I really did not expect the deputy prime minister to visit my husband who is suffering from Parkinson’s Disease...I found out about her visit last night. This is the first time I am meeting Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah.

“I am grateful for her concern and that she is visiting us,” she told reporters here yesterday.

Zaiton’s husband, Othman Ahmad, 65, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease five years ago also suffered fractures in his hip bones.

A mother of four, Zaiton said Dr Wan Azizah reminded her and her family to look after their health.

“She reminded my husband to keep taking the medication,” Zaiton told reporters.

The Port Dickson parliamentary by-election is being held after its incumbent Datuk Danyal Balagopal Abdullah, 68, vacated the seat on Sept 12 to make way for PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to contest and return to Dewan Rakyat.

Polling day has been set for Oct 13 while early voting on Oct 9.

The Port Dickson parliamentary constituency has 75,770 registered voters who are eligible to vote, comprising 43 per cent Malay voters, Chinese (33 per cent), Indians (22 per cent) and others (two per cent). – Bernama
