Set up special committee to handle student delinquency – MCPF
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF) yesterday proposed to Education Ministry to set up a special inter-ministerial committee to study and report on the level of student delinquency in schools.
Its senior vice-chairman, Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, said that the special committee should comprise experts in the respective fields who could fully comprehend the situation and produce longterm solutions to handle the issues of student delinquency in schools.
“It would be appropriate to set up this special inter-ministerial committee to study the problem and have it analysed so that the authorities could identify the causes, examine the contributing factors, produce concrete and feasible solutions to address them.
“The study is necessary to enable the authorities to gauge the seriousness of student delinquency and their involvement in crime, smoking, drugs, mental health and other social issues. Besides, other social problems involving students like truancy, bullying and gangsterism must also be taken into account,” he said in a statement here yesterday.
Lee also said that the outcome of the study could be used to help safeguard the interest of the students and look into the weaknesses of Malaysia education system, particularly with regard to school management.
