SANDAKAN: One of the most anticipated events by golfers in Sabah, the Triangular Golf Meet 2018 held at Sandakan Golf and Country Club from October 6 to 7, was a great success.

The championship joined by the Sandakan Golf and Country Club (SGCC), Kinabalu Golf Club (KGC) and Tawau Golf Club (TGC) was closed by Sandakan Municipal Council (SMC) president Datuk Peter Hii Chang Lik.

In his speech, Peter Hii congratulated the winners, participants and organising committee of the competition, who he said have worked hard to make the event a success.

“Golf as a high ranking sport has brought many people together. This event in particular has been bringing golfers from Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan and Tawau together every year.

“Sandakan is honoured to be hosting the competition this year. We hope the participants enjoyed the hospitality offered here,” he added.

Also present at the closing ceremony were SGCC president Goh Khoon Siah, TGC deputy president Hj Pondren Hj Nawa, Sabah Softwood Sdn Bhd (main sponsor of the event) COO Dominic Dambul as well as KGC president Datuk Abd Razak Walli.

Hosts SGCC emerged as the overall champion of the competition with 79.5 points, followed by TGC with 53.5 points in second place and KGC with 47 points in third place.

SGCC also won the Datuk Seri Panglima Koh Kim Chee Challenge Trophy with 37 points against TGC’s 23 points, while Datuk Mohd Hasnol Datuk Ayub won the Challenge Trophy with 39 points against KGC’s 21 points.

TGC won the Datuk James Pang Challenge Trophy with 31 points against KGC with 29 points.

According to Hj Pondren, the competition this time has set a benchmark for the organising committee in the coming years.

“This competition is a fellowship among golfers of the three clubs and it has been going on for more than 30 years. I hope that it will be continued for many years to come,” he said.

KGC in Kota Kinabalu will be the host for the competition next year.
