Petronas’ outdoor camp for students
KOTA KINABALU: A total of 68 Year Six students from four primary schools in Sabah attended a three-day camp at Outward Bound Sabah (OBS) in Kinarut, organised under Program Sentuhan Ilmu Petronas (PSIP).
The camp, which ended yesterday, aimed to help the students prepare for the transition to secondary school next year.
Apart from the camp organised here, Petronas is also carrying out similar PSIP and Back-to-School programmes in nine other states and two federal territories, benefitting more than 6,500 selected primary school students, with total assistance worth RM3.1 million.
At the camp, students were exposed to a range of adventure activities including team dynamics games, rock climbing and flying-fox, to nurture selfconfidence, team work and independence skills.
Sabah State Education Director Datuk Maimunah Suhaibul lauded Petronas’ commitment in assisting less privileged students to improve their academic and non-academic knowledge and experience.
“I believe this outdoor activity is an opportunity for the students to discover and challenge themselves beyond the traditional classroom setting. The experiences that they gain from this camp will have a positive effect on their self-esteem and plans for the future,” Maimunah said in her speech delivered by Ednan Muyong, the State Education Department’s Senior Assistant Director (Guidance and Counselling Unit).
Petronas also presented backto-school items comprising school bags and stationery to the students.
General manager of Petronas Sabah and Labuan Regional Office, Rokiah Sulaiman said: “We hope the items can, in some way, lessen the burden of parents as they prepare for their children to enter secondary school.”
There are currently four schools under the PSIP in Sabah namely SK Lubok Darat and SK Padang Berampah in Sipitang, SK Gayang in Tuaran and SK Kg Imbak in Tongod.
