MIRI: Miri FM aims to set a new record in the Malaysia Book of Records by holding the longest sape music performance – a feat set for attempt this December.

Acording to Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin, sape music is not only popular in Malaysia, but also in other countries.

“Miri FM will not only be setting a new record in the Malaysia Book of Record, but it will also boost the tourism industry here,” he said when officiating at Miri FM’s ‘Futsal Carnival’ yesterday.

Lee, who is Senadin assemblyman, said sape music is a new attraction in Sarawak’s tourism industry.

“We have taken sape music and Sarawak cultural dancers to Asian China Expo, where they received overwhelming response from the patrons at the expo.

“In fact, cultural performances and sape music have boosted the name of Sarawak and we were also given recognition at the expo,” he pointed out.

In view of that, Lee believed that the initiative by Miri FM to highlight the longest sape rhythm record-attempt would definitely attract many listeners.

“I believe that this initiative will not only attract Miri FM listeners, but will also promote Sarawak to visitors from our neighbouring countries,” he said.

Lee also hoped that more parties would organise similar activities set to help boost the tourism industry in this resort city.

Touching on the futsal carnival, Lee said it could become a medium to promote healthy lifestyle through sports.

“We had the National Sports Day yesterday (Saturday) to promote sports as one of the regular healthy activities that should continuously be practised,” he said.

Meanwhile RTM Miri controller Zaidi Bujang said more than 30 teams took part in the inaugural carnival.

RTM Miri also held a ‘Fun Run’, which received encouraging response from members of the local public.

“To make RTM Miri more community-oriented, we will organise and run various activities under our corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme, which will involve the participation of local communities,” he said.
