KOTA KINABALU: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s Port Dickson by-election victory serves as a testament to the people’s trust in Pakatan Harapan (PH).

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Shafie Apdal said the win was expected and had lauded PH for securing such a huge majority.

“I would like to congratulate Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for winning the Port Dickson byelection; we had expected him to win.

“Even though the number of voters had decreased compared to the previous election; but in terms of performance, (Pakatan Harapan’s) majority had increased.

“This shows that the people still have high hopes for Pakatan Harapan to continue leading the country,” Shafie told reporters after officiating the Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM) Sabah Chapter 43rd Annual Dinner on Saturday.

Anwar won the seven-cornered contest with an astonishing majority of 23,560 votes; he garnered a total of 31,016 votes.

Shafie, who is also the Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) president, asserted that the Sabah state government will always be prepared to cooperate with the ruling coalition at the federal level to strengthen the direction for the formation of a new Malaysia.

Anwar is expected to be sworn in as Port Dickson MP at the Dewan Rakyat today.

With the victory, Anwar is just a step away from being the successor to Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as the eighth Malaysian Prime Minister, which was agreed upon by the four component parties of PH before the 14th GE on May 9.

Separately, Shafie said that it is important for the state government to work together with architect institutions such as PAM.

He urged the local architects to reflect the culture and environment of Sabah in their building designs.

He said such designs can attract more tourists to come to Sabah as it is more unique compared to the usual modern building designs elsewhere.

Among those present in the event were PAM Sabah chairman Ar Arnold Kwan and Luyang assemblyman Phoong Jin Zhe.
