52 local authorities in list for low carbon cities by 2020 — Greentech
KUALA LUMPUR: In driving Malaysia’s commitment towards reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions intensity of up to 45 percent by 2030, a total of 52 Local Authorities from major urban areas have been targetted to begin their journey towards low-carbon city by 2020.
Malaysian Green Technology Corp (GreenTech) said the local authorities were identified under the Low Carbon Cities Framework (LCCF) that would assist local authorities, developers and universities achieve low carbon status by providing tools to implement strategies that would help reduce their carbon emission in phases.
Globally the latest Intergovernmental Climate Change Panel (IPCC) Report has outlined the need for immediate and concrete action towards reducing CO2 emissions.
“The time for action is now and through LCCF, Malaysia has a strong foundation to build on to push towards low carbon,” it said In a statement yesterday.
The LCCF was jointly developed by the Ministry of Energy, Science, Technology Environment and Climate Change (MESTECC) and GreenTech to implement strategies to effectively reduce overall CO2 emissions and monitor the progress.
The statement added this year, three Local Authorities received the Diamond Recognition Award at the International Greentech and Eco Products Exhibition and Conference Malaysia (IGEM) 2018 namely Majlis Bandaraya Shah Alam (MBSA), Majlis Perbandaran Klang (MPK) and Majlis Perbandaran Seberang Prai (MPSP).
They have successfully reduced a combined total of 4,268.15 t CO2 in emissions and had achieved building energy efficiency, waste recycling, providing low carbon mobility solutions and substantive tree planting in their cities.
