Lawyer confirms Malaysian drug trafficker hanged in Singapore

-

SINGAPORE: It has been confirmed that Malaysian citizen Prabu N. Pathmanathan was hanged at Changi prison at dawn yesterday for drug trafficking, according to his family's lawyer N. Surendran.

“The family has claimed the body and will be cremating the remains today,” the Advisor to Lawyers for Liberty said in a statement forwarded to Bernama here appended with the latest photo of Prabu.

The lawyer said that late Thursday night, the Singapore President's Office delivered a letter to Prabu's family in response to their clemency petition.

The letter stated that 'the clemency process had concluded' and 'we are unable to accede to your request', he said.

Surendran noted that Prabu's parents and siblings thanked the Malaysian government, and everyone on both sides of the causeway for their support and prayers over the past few difficult days.

“We understand that Malaysian cabinet ministers had spoken directly to Singapore's leaders in a bid to halt the execution, but to no avail,” said Surendran.

It was reported on Oct 24 that Datuk Liew Vui Keong would write a letter to the Singapore government to urge it to commute the death sentence on Prabu.

The Minister in the Prime Minister's Department said he hoped that Singapore would commute Prabu's sentence to life imprisonment.

Prabu, 31, had been sentenced to death for committing several acts preparatory to and for the purposes of trafficking in 227.82g of diamorphine or heroin into the island state on Dec 31, 2014. - Bernama
