LUMUT: Swift action by two Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) personnel saved two fishermen from drowning after they fell off a boat during a fishing trip at Selat Dinding near the RMN naval base jetty on Thursday.

In the 8pm incident, Weltron Duanis and Jamalul Hayat A. Baser, from the navy vessels KD Mahawangsa and KD Kasturi respectively, managed to rescue fishermen Mohd Izman Ibrahim, 35, and his friend Muhammad Zulhusni Mohamad, 25, who fell off their boat, believed to have been hit by big waves, while fishing at about 200 metres from the naval base jetty.

The Western Fleet Command Headquarters in a statement today said that following the report received by its operations centre, both Weltron and Jamalul Hayat, who were at their respective ships docked at the jetty, rushed and swam towards both victims who were about to drown.

“RMN through the Western Fleet operations centre has mobilised its boat to the scene immediately to assist the rescue operations.

“The boat arrived at the scene to take all four to safety and arrived at the Himpitan 11 jetty at 8.20pm,” the statement said.

The two victims were then taken to the Armed Forces Hospital Lumut for further treatment and reported to be in stable condition, it said. Bernama
