Tawau club dominate Sabah Athle cs Open
The Tawau Track and Field Club emerged as the overall champions in the 65th Sabah Athle cs Open Championship that ended at the Likas Stadium late Saturday.
KOTA KINABALU: The Tawau Track and Field Club emerged as the overall champions in the 65th Sabah Athletics Open Championship that ended at the Likas Stadium late Saturday.
The club under head coach Dzul Fikar Ag Anak bagged 10 gold, six silver and two bronze medals to beat over 30 teams who took part in the two-day championship.
The Sabah Sports School Malaysia (SSMS) finished in a distant second with three gold and two silver while former champions Ranau District Athletics Association settled for third placing with three gold.
The Tawau Track and Field Club also excelled in awards by collecting three individual awards for Best Athletes.
The club’s Best Athletes recipients comprise Amirul Khairul in the Boy’s Under-12; and middle-distance runner Raymond Yew and sprinter Chelsea E. Bopulas in both Open categories for Men and Women, respectively.
The other Best Athlete award winners are Danea Humariah Shariman Sufry of the Sarawak Development Team (Girl’s Under12), Esther Joanne Alios of Tuaran Athletic (Girl’s Under-15) and Jad Rizalman Wasif of the Ranau District Athletics Association (Boy’s Under-15).
Tawau sent a 35-member squad to the championship, led by team manager Rasyidy Mohd Sidek.
The head coach was Dzul Fikar Ag Anak, assisted by coaches Azriansyah Mohammad, Saipul Buhari Juanda and Karim Batjo.
In all, the two-day championship saw 612 athletes from 39 teams taking part.
The Sabah Athletics Association jointly organised the championship in collaboration with the Sabah Sports Council and the State Education Department.
Among other highlights of the championship was the inclusion of the under-12 category as well as participation of three deaf athletes from Ranau for the first time in the championship.
