Donggongon traffic flow, parking woe to be improved – DO

- By Nancy Lai

KOTA KINABALU: Penampang District Officer Robert Stidi is in talks with the state Public Works Department (PWD) on methods to improve the traffic flow in and around Donggongon township.

“This is among the measures that the District Council is taking to reduce the traffic congestion in and around the township,” he said when met at SM St Michael Penampang on Saturday.

Robert was among the invited guests to witness SM St Michael’s attempt to gain entry into the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) with the most number of pots made from recyclable materials.

He said this when asked about the traffic congestion and parking problems in Donggongon township which was posted on social media.

Netizens are complaining about the indiscriminate parking in Donggongon township, especially on tamu days, which are on every Thursday and Friday, as it causes traffic congestion.

Robert lamented that the parking problem was unavoidable on these two days and stressed that the District Council was looking at ways and means to resolve it.

“We will try to come up with a solution soon and one of the means is to open up temporary parking areas. I am talking with PWD on how we can improve the traffic flow, maybe implementing one way traffic in and out of the township.

“We also want to earmark some areas where we can convert into temporary parking space. For example the open space behind Petronas fuel station and the space next to the district fire station,” he said.

“The District Council is also mulling the idea of introducing parallel parking in the township,” he said, and disclosed that these were some of the things being discussed by the District Council Traffic Committee and PWD.

Robert also said he was hopeful for Penampang to be upgraded into a municipality within two years.

“As a municipality, we will be in better shape to implement gazetted by-laws such as parking fees in the district. We will have more staff and will be able to serve the public better,” he stressed.
