Police detain three men in connection with cable theft

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Police detained three men in connection with cable thefts during a raid carried out at Jalan Chain Ferry, Perai here on Saturday.

Seberang Perai Tengah district police chief ACP Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid said following public tip-off the police went to the location under the bridge at Jalan Chain Ferry at 8.30am and found the three men inside a Perodua Kancil car.

“The three men in the car were believed to have just stolen the cable under the bridge and during inspection police seized about 100 metres of cable apart from the equipment used including cable cutters, pliers and screwdrive­r as well as an orange vest.

“The investigat­ion also found that the men have also posing as contractor to steal the cable,” he said here yesterday.

The men, aged 38 and 49, have several criminal records and were believed to have been involved in cable theft for the past several months, he said.

The three men were remanded for five days to assist the investigat­ions under Section 431A of the Penal Code, he said.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, the police have arrested a 45-year-old man in connection with several house break-in cases in Jalan Permatang Tengah here Saturday night.

Nik Ros Azhan said the suspect had six previous criminal and drug records and he was remanded for four days to facilitate the investigat­ions. - Bernama
