KOTA KINABALU: The late Wildlife Rescue Unit (WRU) veterinarian, Dr Diana Angeles Ramirez Saldivar was one who cared deeply about animal conservation and loved her job tremendously.

She arrived in Sabah eight years ago, in August 2010 to work with the WRU and had been actively involved in various animal rescue operations in Sabah.

According to a post at the Danau Girang Field Centre on their Facebook, Diana spent eight years working with WRU where she supported many of the field centre’s projects including the collaring of elephants, clouded leopards, proboscis monkeys and crocodiles.

It also mentioned that Diana juggled with working full-time and studying for her Master’s degree at Universiti Malaysia Sabah on proboscis monkeys’ health.

She was passionate and dedicated to wildlife observation in Sabah, it said.

“She fought many battles for the well-being of wildlife and captive animals in Sabah. Sabah must honour her contribution. She inspired many of us and she will always be remembered, she will always be in our hearts and we will continue her fight,” the FB post read on Tuesday following news of her passing.

Her friend, Dr Milena Salgado, whose husband is Danau Girang Field Centre’s director, Dr Benoit Goossens told The Borneo Post that funeral arrangements were being made for Diana.

It was learnt that Diana’s mother and sister were here presently and her family has agreed to donate her organs.

Milena also informed that the wake services would take place today, Thursday, 1st November, at Wisma Fook Lu Siew, Jalan Tuaran from 10am to 5pm.

A Catholic requiem mass will be held at 4pm, with the cremation to follow thereafter.
