RM200,000 syabu seized from man in Likas
KOTA KINABALU: The Kota Kinabalu police contingent (IPD KK) through its Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) has made the biggest drug bust in recent years.
Sabah police commissioner Datuk Omar Mammah said a 35-year-old local male was apprehended on October 31 with an estimated RM200,000 worth of methamphetamine (syabu) weighing 4,227.71 grams.
Police had acted on intelligence received regarding drug distribution activity in the Likas Bay area, where they found the suspect with a plastic bag, apparently waiting for another person.
“Upon inspection, we found the bag contained four plastic packages filled with clear crystals believed to be syabu.
“It was later confirmed to be 4,227.71 grams of the drug, which is the biggest drug seizure by IPD KK in recent years,” he told a press conference yesterday.
The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which upon conviction carries the mandatory death penalty.
Omar added that a test of the suspect’s urine sample was found negative for traces of drugs, and he did not have any previous criminal record.
Further interrogations revealed that the suspect had received the drugs from a sender in West Malaysia, via courier service.
Omar said further that the seizure was part of efforts by (former) Kota Kinabalu police chief ACP Chandrasehkaran Muthu and his team in their effort to eradicate drugs cases in the district.
“This is an ongoing effort to eliminate distribution of drugs, which we hoped to improve so it could yield more success.
“We also thank the public for channeling information to the police. Arrest statistics from January 1 till October 31 this year stand at 1,859 suspects compared to 1,380 for the same period last year.
“Of the 1,859 arrested, 1,391 or 83.9 percent have been brought to court while the others are pending Chemistry Department reports.
“This year, we have seized 6,627.71 grams of syabu worth an estimated RM331,350, cannabis weighing 141.16 grams, ketamine weighing 340.44 grams valued at about RM51,000, ecstasy pills weighing 9.31 grams, ecstasy powder weighing 59.6 grams and kratom weighing 4,680 grams,” he said.
