Labuan PH to help address people’s longstanding issues
LABUAN: Labuan Pakatan Harapan will be working closely with the Labuan Corporation (LC) to resolve longstanding issues.
Among the issues to be addressed include the parking management system, LDA housing flat and land ordinance issue.
Labuan Corporation chairman Datuk Seri Amir Hussien said a number of issues were discussed with Pakatan Harapan Leaders here on people’s predicament that would be given immediate attention.
“We have heard about people’s grievances on the shortage of parking lots in the town centre which is now being resolved by LC’s enforcement department with certain parking areas in town to be handed over to LC to manage to ease the shortages,” he said in a joint press conference with PKR Labuan chief Simsuddin Sidek at Menara Labuan Corporation here yesterday.
Amir said there had been proposals to build a multi-storey parking lot which is still in the pipeline.
The parking management was previously managed by the lossmaking LDA Holdings Sdn Bhd under the Yayasan Pembangunan Labuan (YPL) before handed back to LC beginning October 1 after it incurred losses for three consecutive years since 2016.
LC has taken measures to ease the parking shortage by imposing parking charges in the industrial zone warehouse areas.
LC currently has a total of 2,564 parking lots in the town centre, which is still insufficient and has triggered public outcry due to the increasing newly registered vehicles daily.
The local authority was providing a total of 485 new parking lots located at old food court (33 lots), Jalan Wawasan (46 lots), next to Dorsett Grand Hotel (30), Dataran Labuan (75 lots), Labuan Times Square (85 lots) and Lazenda (183 lots).
On the LDA housing flat issue, Amir said it would be brought up to Yayasan Wilayah Persekutuan to assist in coming up with better solution on the housing ownership.
“We will try to negotiate with Yayasan Wilayah Persekutuan whether it can purchase all the units there and reoffer to the tenants with reasonable price.
“The much-talked about land ordinance will also be discussed with FT Minister on how we can resolve this for the people’s interest,” Amir added
Labuan PKR chief Simsuddin Sidek said at least three proposals had been submitted to LC for a review on the parking management through zoning system with different charges, additional parking lots and the introduction of bus inflow centralise system.
“LC must fully utilise the idle open spaces for new parking lots, the possibility of imposing slightly higher charges on ‘hot spots’ and centralise and schedule bus system like city bus coming in to the town centre, and we feel the coupon system must also be improved or simplifed,” he said.
