Khatra Open archery competition sees 220 archers
KOTA KINABALU: Around 220 archers took part in the Sabah Traditional Archery Competition - Khatra Open 2018 which concluded here on Sunday.
The two-day competition, which saw 18 clubs from around the country take part, was held at the Ampuan Range Pantai Kenangan Bongawan, Papar and at the SMK Datuk Peter Mojuntin mini stadium.
Among the objectives of the competition were to further promote and develop traditional archery in the country while also unearthing new talents at the same time.
The competition was also aimed at introducing and promoting traditional archery as one of Sabah’s tourism products, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal.
Chong Chen Bin, the Assistant Minister of Trade and Industry, delivered the speech.
Among those present at the prize presentation and closing ceremony at the mini stadium was the principal of SMK Datuk Peter Mojuntin, Hajah Nuraini Fauziah Derin.
The participating clubs were Khatra Kota Kinabalu, Kesatria Kota Kinabalu, Pewaris Kuala Lumpur, Ladarch LD, GPS Sarawak, Katraums, Petala Labuan, Akademi Memanah Masjid Bandar Baru Senawang Selangor, S.P.A.C Sipitang, Al Ilmi Keningau, Kemtram Kota Marudu, North Borneo Archers, Kemtras Semporna, Petra Tawau, Kelab Rimayah, Majlis Bandaraya Johor Bahru, GPU N9 and Kelab Ppian as well as individual entries.
The competition featured various categories including for deaf athletes, recurve event, individual and team dynamic events.
However, the Nusantara and Khatra Blackout Challenge for men and women were cancelled due to bad weather.
One of the unique aspects of the competition was that the participants were clad in traditional costumes while taking part in their respective events.
Meanwhile, the organisers also thanked the sponsors including La Sports Corporation, Royal Archery, Pan Borneo Hotel Kota Kinabalu, Sazarice, Wisma Harta, Persatuan Suang Lotud Sabah, Ryanasweet Collection, KK Drinks Sdn Bhd, YB Jannie Lasimbang and YB Jennifer Lasimbang.
