Durian scam artist nabbed in Kota Belud

KOTA KINABALU: A local man from Kota Belud was arrested by police yesterday for his involvemen­t in 52 investment scams with losses amounting to more than RM800,000.

City police chief ACP Habibi Majinji said the 25-year-old suspect was apprehende­d by police following an alleged ‘Musang King durian’ investment which promised huge return, at a bus station in Telipok yesterday.

According to a police report lodged by one of the suspect’s victim, the latter was promised of huge return for investment in Musang King durian that was advertised by a company through WhatsApp.

“The advertisme­nt promised a return of up to RM720 perday for the next 78 days.

“The victim got excited and made an investment of RM12,000 to a bank account on Nov 11.

“Not long after making his ‘investment’, the victim received RM3,600 which is said to be the profit from the investment.

“The victim felt he had been cheated when he received a telegram stating that no further payment can be made following an upgrade of the company’s system,” said Habibi.

Following the arrest of the suspect, police believe they have solved 52 similar cases with losses up to RM848,719, said Habibi.

The suspect has been remanded and will be investigat­ed under Section 420 of the Penal Code.
