16 agricultur­e commoditie­s record over 100 pct SSR

KUALA LUMPUR: A research conducted by the Department of Statistics has shown that 16 out of 33 selected agricultur­al commoditie­s have a self-sufficienc­y ratio (SSR) of more than 100 per cent in 2017.

Chief statistici­an Datuk Seri Dr Uzair Mahidin said the agricultur­al commoditie­s were divided into three categories, namely crops (fruits and vegetables), livestock and fisheries.

He said for fruits, seven out of 13 fruits recorded a SSR of more than 100 per cent, with watermelon being the highest at 151.7 per cent followed by papaya (143.6 per cent) and star fruit (136 per cent).

Per capita consumptio­n (PCC) of coconut was the highest at 19.4 kg/year followed by banana (10.0 kg/year), pineapple (7.6 kg/year)

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s official reserve assets amounted to US$101.70 billion as at end-October 2018, while other foreign currency assets amounted to US$52.3 million for the same period, Bank Negara Malaysia said.

Overall, the detailed breakdown ofinternat­ionalreser­vesunderth­e IMF Special Data Disseminat­ion Standard format indicates that as at end-October 2018, Malaysia’s reserves remain usable.

The BNM said for the next 12 months, the predetermi­ned shortterm outflows of foreign currency loans, securities and deposits, which included among others and durian (6.4 kg/year), he said in a statement yesterday.

As for vegetables, Uzair said six vegetables recorded a SSR of more than 100 per cent, namely spinach, lady’s finger, long bean, brinjal, cucumber, and tomato.

“The PCC of round cabbage was the highest (5.4 kg/year) followed by mustard (4.4 kg/year), tomato (3.9 kg/year) and cucumber (2.3 kg/year),” he said.

As for livestock, he said the SSR of chicken/duck egg (113.7 per cent) was the highest followed by poultry meat (98.2 per cent) and pork (92.1 per cent), while mutton scheduled repayment of external borrowings­bythegover­nmentand repayment of maturity proceeds from the foreign currency BNM Interbank Bills amounted to US$1.47 billion.

“The short forward positions amounted to USD22.79 billion, reflecting the management of ringgit liquidity in the money market.

“In line with the practice adopted since April 2006, the data exclude projected foreign currency inflows arising from interest income and the drawdown of project loans amounting to US$2.53 billion in the next 12 was the lowest (10.7 per cent).

“Poultry meat recorded the highest PCC of 52.0 kilogramme­s per year followed by chicken/duck egg (22.2 kg/year) and pork (16.3 kg/year),” he said.

In the fisheries segment, he said cuttlefish recorded the highest SSR of 104.8 per cent while mackerel was the lowest (82.9 per cent).
