Egg supply sufficient in Sabah — Junz
KOTA KINABALU: Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Sabah Datuk Junz Wong said his ministry had been working with suppliers to ensure sufficient supply of eggs in the state.
He said this while responding to claims that there was increase in eggs price and also purported shortage in Sabah.
It was reported that price of eggs had increased due to the bird flu outbreak in Tuaran in early August.
“Major farms are importing eggs from Peninsular Malaysia since the outbreak to make up for the short supply,” Junz said.
Therefore, the claim that the shortage of egg supply due to the bird flu has yet to be determined.
It might be that there was an increase in consumption of eggs and hence factor of supply and demand.
“My ministry (the government) has reduced the inspection and incidental charges on imported eggs from five sen to one sen. This is very minimal,” Junz said.
He pointed out that currently the egg price in West Malaysia was even higher than in Sabah.
However, Junz said some large farms were still selling at standard price, with eggs brought in from the peninsula as their social responsibility.
And they assured they would continue to do this until their farm production was back to normal, he said.
Hence, the minister urged the public not to worry about the egg supply shortage in Sabah.
He said his ministry was monitoring the situation from time to time and ensured there was sufficient supply.
