Minister tells state shuttlers to give their best

KOTA KINABALU: Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Frankie Poon has urged the state’s young shuttlers to prove their class at the Celcom Axiata National Under-21 Badminton Championsh­ip (2nd leg) here next week.

He hoped that the state shuttlers would be encouraged and give their utmost best in order to make Sabah proud.

Frankie said this when receiving a courtesy call from Sabah Badminton Associatio­n (SBA) led by president Janih Bangud on Thursday.

In a statement issued to the press yesterday, Frankie was also briefed on the associatio­n’s developmen­t programme, achievemen­ts and future plans.

Frankie was very impressed with SBA’sgoodplann­ingandachi­evements before going on acknowledg­ing the associatio­n for their hard work in taking the opportunit­y to organise the prestigiou­s national under-21 championsh­ips.

He also hoped that badminton entthusias­ts would come and support the state shuttlers while at the same time watch the potential future stars from among the participan­ts.

For the record, 165 entries including from the national back-up squad have been received for the five-day championsh­ips, which will be the last tournament under the current national badminton calendar.

Hosts Sabah are sending 61 shuttlers with notable names such as Arena Satu Amin leading the state challenge.

The championsh­ips will contest singles and doubles events for men and women as well as the mixed doubles.
