Sabah karatekas bag 2 silver, 7 bronze medals
KOTA KINABALU: Shotokan Karate Association of Sabah (SKAS) bagged two silver and seven bronze medals at the Shotokai Brunei Open Karate Championship, last week.
The two-day tournament which was held in collaboration with the Brunei Tourism Board was given a royal grace by Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Anak Raafiah Amalul Bulqiah Ibni duli Yang Teramat Mulia Paduka Seri Pengiran Bendahara Seri Maharaja Permaisuara Pengiran Muda Haji Sufri Bolkiah.
SKAS president sensei Simon Chia said the Princess of Brunei stayed during the whole day and mingled with the crowd.
“She was very down to earth and I think that helped to inspire everyone during the event,” he said.
According to Simon, the medals came from Andryan Chong Sze Hoong and Bryan Isidore Tubong, while the bronze came from the rest of the athletes.
“It was another tournament wherein we had to aim high to improve our standards and learn from the other athletes. Some categories were very strong indeed,” he said.
Towards this end, Simon thanked everyone in the association including the athletes and their parents for their utmost support and commitment for the outing.
“We could not have done it without their support. And to the organising chairperson, sensei Mohammad Nabil and team, we congratulate them for a job well done and generous hospitality. We felt very welcome,” he said.
