Filipino arrested over assault on nephew

-

KOTA KINABALU: A 61-yearold Filipino was arrested by Penampang police to facilitate investigation into an assault on his nephew.

Penampang police chief, DSP Haris Ibrahim, said, the suspect was arrested a day after the assault on the 41-year-old victim.

The victim suffered a broken arm and cuts to his head and arm for which he received stitches during treatment.

Haris said, the assault happened at about 9.30 am on Dec 7 as the younger man was walking to a mosque located near a bakery in Penampang when he came across the suspect clearing his patch of banana trees who called him a “pembuyuk” (cheater). The younger man retorted by replying “ko la pembuyuk” (you are the cheater).

His remark prompted the suspect, who is also his uncle, to attack him with a ‘tombak’ (spear), hitting him twice and causing him to fall into a drain. Besides sustaining cuts and lacerations as the result of the fall, the victim also broke his arm when he attempted to ward off a blow to his head.

He sought treatment at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and subsequently lodged a police report against his uncle.

Haris said, initial investigation revealed that the suspect was unhappy with his nephew as the latter had reportedly cheated him before.

Investigation is being carried out under Section 326 of the Penal Code, Haris added.
