Sabah MACC to intensify war against corruption

-

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Malaysian Anti Corruption Committee (MACC) hopes to beef up its war against corruption with the setting up of an Anti Corruption Committee at the state level.

Its director Datuk Sazali Saibi said he would be meeting with State Secretary Datuk Hashim Paijan on Tuesday, Dec 11 to discuss the proposal to set up the committee.

“If the proposal is approved, we will have an Anti Corruption Committee at the state level. From that we will then set up committees at the district level,” Sazali told reporters after the launching of the state level International Anti Corruption Day program by Law and Native Affairs Minister Datuk Aidi Mokhtar here yesterday.

Sazali disclosed that under the proposal, the state level Anti Corruption Committee would be chaired by the State Secretary and its members would include the permanent secretaries of all ministries as well as departmental heads.

District officers would also be on the committee, he added.

Meanwhile on the program yesterday, Sazali said it was an annual one where MACC Sabah engaged students from higher learning institutes to help increase public awareness about combating corruption.

“This is the fifth year we are doing it and today, we have about 400 students who will be going around the state capital meeting the public and spreading the message about combating corruption,” he said.

He said public awareness about corruption had increased and their cooperation with MACC had also improved, especially in providing information and lodging complaints of corrupt practices.

Sazali said there were plans to also include other districts in future programs if the budget permitted.
