Sandakan Municipal Council (SMC) president Datuk Peter Hii Chang Lik has urged all business operators to adhere to rules set by SMC as stated in their business licences, and refrain from causing obstruc on to pedestrians.

SANDAKAN: Sandakan Municipal Council (SMC) president Datuk Peter Hii Chang Lik has urged all business operators to adhere to rules set by SMC as stated in their business licence.

He urged sellers to not simply sell goods outside their premises and block the pedestrian walkway.

“SMC has set a guideline stating that premises owners could only put their goods within two feet (out of five feet) space outside their premises.

“Although they have valid trading licence, they should not put their goods on the walkway to a point that they block part of the walkway for people to walk,” he said, when inspecting the Bandar Sibuga Jaya market, at mile 8 Labuk road here, yesterday.

Hii also urged hawkers at the market not to place their goods over the yellow line set by SMC.

“This is an offence and they could be issued with a compound and their items could be seized by the council,” he warned.

He has called for the cooperation of all business premises owners and hawkers to comply to the rules and regulations set by SMC, and at the same time ensure that their premises are clean.

“Some business owners are prone to throwing rubbish and leftover food into the drain, which is one of the main causes for clogging of the drainage system.

“The situation becomes worse when the drain is clogged and water overflows from the drain onto the road during rainy days. For so long as they don’t change their attitude, this problem is not going to be resolved and it will continue to recur,” he said.

SMC, he said, will ensure that cleaning work is performed according to schedule to avoid such problem from happening.

“I urge business owners and hawkers here to be aware of cleanliness and hygienic aspects at their premises for the comfort of the local community here,” he said.
