KOTA KINABALU: Sabah concluded the National Senior and Junior Weightlifting Championship with two silver medals at the Starcity Asia City here yesterday.

That however did not stop hosts Sabah from ending the four-championship as the most successful team in the competition though.

Caroline Joachim’s silver in the women’s +87kg senior and category, achieved after lifting 73kg in Snatch and 125kg in Clean & Jerk for the total 218kg, saw Sabah bag overall tally of seven gold, six silver and three bronzes medals.

Selangor finished second with six golds and one silver followed by the Armed Forces (ATM) with four gold, six silver and five bronze medals.

However, there was no overall champions title up for grabs in the championship.

Meanwhile, Sabah Weightlifting Association president Philip Gisan was pleased with performances of the state athletes, the 2020 Malaysia Games (Sukma) trainees in particular, in the championships.

“The tournament is one of the platforms for the athletes to qualify for the Games and that is why we are very happy with their performances.

“It is also hoped those athletes who are no longer eligible for Sukma will look towards gaining places in the national team,” he said yesterday.

“Overall, the championship has been a success but there is room for improvement...we will try to do better in the future,” he added.

For the record, Sabah gold medallists were Kevdylan Wong, Fandylina Adim (two), Elly Cascandra Englebert (two) and Marceeta Marlyn Marcus (two).

As for silver, the winners were Caseyndra Junaity, Callixtus Daunis, Velerick Matin and St Xavier Henry apart from Caroline’s haul yesterday.

The bronzes were from Kevdylan, Velerick and Arthur Liew.
