Fire leaves 300 vil­lagers home­less

KOTA KINABALU: More than 300 peo­ple in Kam­pung Karakit on Pu­lau Bangi in Ku­dat lost their homes to a fire yes­ter­day af­ter­noon.

Ac­cord­ing to the state Fire and Res­cue Ser­vices’ op­er­a­tion room, 81 houses built above the wa­ter and on land on the is­land were gut­ted by the fire which broke out about 3pm.

Also de­stroyed were two units of teach­ers’ quar­ters and a Toy­ota Vigo.

Fire­men from the Ku­dat fire sta­tion had to travel by the Malaysia Mar­itime En­force­ment Agency’s boat to the is­land lo­cated 40km from the main­land. By the time they ar­rived there, the fire was out and all that was left were the em­bers of the houses de­stroyed.

The fire­men then made sure that there was no dan­ger of the fire reignit­ing.

The vic­tims are now tem­po­rar­ily housed at Seko­lah Ke­bangsaan Karakit, Seko­lah Agama Negeri Karakit and the district of­fice’s rest­house.

No loss of lives or in­juries were re­ported in the in­ci­dent.
