PUTATAN: Tanjung Aru assemblyman Datuk Junz Wong will direct the Putatan district officer to check on all squatter areas to ensure the risk of fire hazard is reduced.
Junz who is also Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry, said this to reporters after visiting the Kampung Pasir Putih fire victims. The visit to the temporary settlement at the Putatan Community Hall was led by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hj Mohd Shafie Hj Apdal.
“We are doing whatever we can to help and meet the needs of the fire victims,” he said.
“I had a brief discussion with officers of the relevant authorities and have urged them to extend the necessary assistance to the unfortunate victims of the fire incident. My officers from the ministry and the division have also been on the ground since Friday to assist,” he added.
Meanwhile, Junz expressed his gratitude and appreciation to those who have come forward to assist the fire victims in whatever form. Junz promised to bring up to the State Cabinet as soon as possible the resettlement of the squatters under the ‘Projek Perumahan Rakyat’ (PPR) housing programme.
The houses of 74 families were razed by fire on Friday affecting some 315 people.
“I am really saddened and shocked by this unfortunate mishap. I hope no one is riding for cheap publicity from this disaster,” Junz told reporters.
After visiting the fire victims, Junz stopped at the first beach at Tanjung Aru to brief the hawkers on the plan to allow them to operate there.
“I am working very closely with the new Kota Kinabalu Mayor so that the hawkers can start operating soon,” he said.
Junz then proceeded to the Tanjung Aru Low Cost Housing Flats to distribute school bags under the School Bag Assistance Program to primary one to six school students.
He also had a walkabout at the flats and talked with local leaders to get their feedback and understand the problems of the residents. He promised to tackle and resolve the problems faced by the residents of the Low Cost Housing Flats together with Kota Kinabalu City Hall.
Subsequently, Junz proceeded to inspect the Tanjung Aru Lama jetty which has been planned to be upgraded and turned into a tourism spot to attract tourists and create commercial opportunities for the locals.
