Junz prom­ises to help fire vic­tims

PUTATAN: Tan­jung Aru assem­bly­man Datuk Junz Wong will di­rect the Putatan dis­trict of­fi­cer to check on all squat­ter ar­eas to en­sure the risk of fire haz­ard is re­duced.

Junz who is also Min­is­ter of Agri­cul­ture and Food In­dus­try, said this to re­porters after vis­it­ing the Kam­pung Pasir Pu­tih fire vic­tims. The visit to the tem­po­rary set­tle­ment at the Putatan Com­mu­nity Hall was led by Chief Min­is­ter Datuk Seri Pan­glima Hj Mohd Shafie Hj Ap­dal.

“We are do­ing what­ever we can to help and meet the needs of the fire vic­tims,” he said.

“I had a brief dis­cus­sion with of­fi­cers of the rel­e­vant au­thor­i­ties and have urged them to ex­tend the nec­es­sary as­sis­tance to the un­for­tu­nate vic­tims of the fire in­ci­dent. My of­fi­cers from the min­istry and the divi­sion have also been on the ground since Fri­day to as­sist,” he added.

Mean­while, Junz ex­pressed his grat­i­tude and ap­pre­ci­a­tion to those who have come for­ward to as­sist the fire vic­tims in what­ever form. Junz promised to bring up to the State Cab­i­net as soon as pos­si­ble the re­set­tle­ment of the squat­ters un­der the ‘Pro­jek Peruma­han Rakyat’ (PPR) hous­ing pro­gramme.

The houses of 74 fam­i­lies were razed by fire on Fri­day af­fect­ing some 315 peo­ple.

“I am re­ally sad­dened and shocked by this un­for­tu­nate mishap. I hope no one is rid­ing for cheap pub­lic­ity from this dis­as­ter,” Junz told re­porters.

After vis­it­ing the fire vic­tims, Junz stopped at the first beach at Tan­jung Aru to brief the hawk­ers on the plan to al­low them to op­er­ate there.

“I am work­ing very closely with the new Kota Kin­a­balu Mayor so that the hawk­ers can start op­er­at­ing soon,” he said.

Junz then pro­ceeded to the Tan­jung Aru Low Cost Hous­ing Flats to dis­trib­ute school bags un­der the School Bag As­sis­tance Pro­gram to pri­mary one to six school stu­dents.

He also had a walk­a­bout at the flats and talked with lo­cal lead­ers to get their feed­back and un­der­stand the prob­lems of the res­i­dents. He promised to tackle and re­solve the prob­lems faced by the res­i­dents of the Low Cost Hous­ing Flats to­gether with Kota Kin­a­balu City Hall.

Sub­se­quently, Junz pro­ceeded to in­spect the Tan­jung Aru Lama jetty which has been planned to be up­graded and turned into a tourism spot to at­tract tourists and cre­ate com­mer­cial op­por­tu­ni­ties for the lo­cals.

Fi­nally, he in­spected a few wooden walk­ways that were up­graded us­ing his assem­bly­man fund to en­sure they were prop­erly con­structed.

Guest of honor, Jo Nandu, and Goh, ac­com­pa­nied by Tsang and Lim, hold­ing the EZY Box Lido Four Sea­sons plac­ard that they signed to mark the of­fi­cial grand launch of the out­let.
