Tzu-Chi Foundation donates to 243 students

SANDAKAN: Two hundred and forty-three primary and secondary school students here received a donation from the Taiwan Buddhist Tzu-Chi Foundation Malaysia (Sandakan Liaison) at the Hakka Hall at mile 6 Labuk road here yesterday.

The ceremony, which was held in conjunctio­n with the foundation’s appreciati­on celebratio­n for the end of 2018, was graced by Minister of Health and People’s Wellbeing cum Sandakan member of parliament Datuk Stephen Wong Tien Fatt.

Also present were assistant minister of Local Government and Housing cum Karamuntin­g assemblyma­n George Hiew Vun Zin; Elopura assemblyma­n Calvin Chong Ket Kiun; Sandakan Municipal Council president Datuk Peter Hii Chang Lik and chairman of Tzu Chi Sandakan, Hsieh Hsiu Hua, and other local leaders.

During speaking at the ceremony, Hsieh thanked all the donors who have contribute­d to the effort of Tzu Chi so far. He also said that he hopes more volunteers will step forward to support the Tzu Chi’s movement and for 2019 to be a great year.

In Sandakan, some 130 less fortunate families are assisted under Tzu Chi monthly. Worldwide, the foundation has reached 97 countries where it has volunteers to help those who are in need.

In Malaysia, Tzu Chi is 25 years old in 2018. Assistance is given to all the less fortunate and those in need regardless of their race and religion.
