Chaiyaward emerges as sin­gles ten­nis cham­pion

KUALA LUMPUR: Perlis ten­nis player, Chaiyaward Pet­tani re­deemed his dis­ap­point­ment after emerg­ing as cham­pion in the 16-year sin­gles cat­e­gory in the first round of the 2019 Youth Tour Cir­cuit at the Na­tional Ten­nis Cen­tre, Jalan Duta, here.

Chaiyaward, who ear­lier only emerged as run­ner up in the dou­bles match, was, how­ever, en­er­getic when he trounced Sabah player Ryan Chee 6-0 and 6-0 yes­ter­day.

‘’I part­nered with Ariq Zay­hin in the dou­bles match yes­ter­day, los­ing to Cor­nelius Sia-Tan Lin En. So, I en­deav­our to do bet­ter to­day and I was more fo­cused in the match.

‘’De­spite fac­ing Ryan for the first time, I think he is a tal­ented player and can go much fur­ther. Maybe, I did bet­ter than him to­day,’’ he told the me­dia after the match.

As the top player for the 16-year cat­e­gory, Chaiyaward also re­ceived an in­cen­tive from the Lawn Ten­nis As­so­ci­a­tion of Malaysia (LTAM) to go to the Aus­tralia Open Grand Slam Cham­pi­onship.

The sec­ond se­ries of the Ju­nior Tour Cir­cuit would be con­tin­ued in Negeri Sem­bi­lan on Jan 30 un­til Feb 2.

The Ju­nior Tour Cir­cuit in­volved eight rounds which would end with the Mas­ters Ten­nis Cham­pi­onship in Novem­ber.

The 16-year-old player who is a stu­dent of Seko­lah Me­nen­gah Ke­bangsaan Perlis as­pired to par­tic­i­pate in many more cham­pi­onships this sea­son to col­lect In­ter­na­tional Ten­nis Fed­er­a­tion (ITF) points.

Chaiyaward also en­deav­oured to ad­vance to the fi­nal at the Ju­nior Davis Cup qual­i­fi­ca­tion this year. - Ber­nama
