Sewage leak pollutes Likas Bay claim

-

KOTA KINABALU: The local authority is urged to urgently address the sewerage leakage pollution at the Likas Bay recreational area to ensure the cleanliness of the public beach area.

Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) Likas division chief Dr Joseph Lee claimed that video footage of untreated sewage being spilled into the river had resulted in a change to the sea water colour and emission of stench which is heading towards the Anjung Selera section of Likas Bay.

He said the State Government, in particular the Health and People's Wellbeing Ministry, should be more proactive and order for water tests to be carried out immediately to check whether it is still safe to swim at the Likas Bay.

He added the authority responsible must also issue warnings and updates on the issue of pollution in the area to members of the public, adding that the water pollution may have negative impact on people's health.

Dr Lee also wondered if the expose is merely the tip of the iceberg on the effectiveness of the sewerage treatment plant in Sabah.

“I urge all parties concerned to come forward and report sewerage issues at any housing areas.

“The authority concerned, such as the Local Government and Housing Ministry must inform the public on the contact details of people to call in such event,” he said.

He also asked if the problem is due to incompetence of the new contractor appointed by the State Government, and urged the government to reveal the name of the new contractor.

He also called on nongovernmental organisations and individuals, who labelled themselves as activists, to advocate the issue of pollution at the Likas Bay.
