Nazri’s remarks draw more flak

-

KUALA LUMPUR: United Nations Association of Malaysia (UNAM) finds it downright dishonest and disappointing to suggest that particular individuals are unsuited to hold certain positions of authority on account of their ethnicity or religious affinity.

Referring to Barisan Nasional secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Aziz’s statement that he allegedly made during a political ceramah in Semenyih, UNAM secretarygeneral Datuk Zainal Abidin Ahmad said it went against the Malaysian government’s policy since the early 1970’s to work towards the elimination of identification of race with certain occupations.

“With this, UNAM fully endorses and support Suhakam’s action of condemning Nazri’s controversial statement on the appointment of the Chief Justice, Attorney-General and Finance Minister from among non-Malays as it could trigger racial hatred and dissatisfaction among the people.

“UNAM appreciates the efforts made by successive prime ministers of Malaysia to manage inter-ethnic and inter-religious relations in a rather complex situation in a carefully-planned and sensitive way,” he said in a statement, here, yesterday.

Zainal Abidin said the issue was largely the legacy of a protracted divide and rule policy and practice of the colonial power.

“Malaysia’s rich diversity and dynamism is remarkable. It is a source of strength for our country and has safeguarded peace, harmony and growth aspirations of the people.

“It is the responsibility of all Malaysians to ensure peace and harmony in our nation,” he said. - Bernama
