Hungry 5 arrested for rioting, assaulting waiter over wrong dish

SIBU: Police arrested five men after a misunderst­anding over an ordered dish saw them smashing up a restaurant here and assaulting a waiter.

The incident happened at Jalan Pahlawan around 9.30pm on Tuesday when the men initially became angry over the late arrival of their food.

“When the dish finally arrived, they found it was not what they had ordered and attacked the waiter before smashing up the place and then departing the premises,” said Sibu police chief ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit.

He said upon being notified of the incident by the restaurant’s owner, a police team sprang into action and arrested all five suspects within the hour after identifyin­g them from security camera footage.

He also stressed that the incident was a result of a misunderst­anding and in no way related to gangsteris­m.

“I’m aware the incident has gone viral on social media, and I want to assure the public that it was sparked by a misunderst­anding and had nothing to do with gangsteris­m,” said Stanley, who visited the crime scene yesterday morning with his officers.

He added the suspects, who have been remanded for two days, are being probed for rioting and causing hurt.
