Seek govt help to resolve Skybridge issue — LDP
KOTA KINABALU: Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) chief publicity officer Simon Chin has urged Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Arifin bin Asgali and Mayor Nordin Siman to seek assistance from the Federal and State Governments to resolve the issue of the stalled Skybridge project here.
He said the Skybridge, Pedestrian Linkage and Traffic Improvement Works under Kota Kinabalu City Hall’s (DBKK) Masterplan A commenced construction in July 2015.
“The Skybridge connects five major shopping malls and commercial centres, namely Oceanus Waterfront Mall, Warisan Square, Api-Api Centre, Centre Point Sabah and Asia City.
“The 350-metre Skybridge, the first of its kind in Sabah, is airconditioned and provides stores for small vendors.”
He said the project was scheduled to be completed in November 2017 but was delayed to February and subsequently May last year.
“We have entered March 2019 and the Skybridge has yet to be completed.”
Chin said the Skybridge would help prevent pedestrian accidents among locals and tourists.
“Regrettably, the project was suspended at 95 percent completion.”
He pointed out that the safety barriers erected by the contractor around the stalled Skybridge on the road and pedestrian walkway were a nuisance to motorists.
He added that the barriers also posed a safety hazard to pedestrians as they had to walk on the road with oncoming traffic.
“The project is an eyesore that could leave a bad impression on tourists.”
Hence, Chin urged Arifin, who is responsible for DBKK, and Nordin to engage the State and Federal Governments in search for a solution to solve the problem that has caused the suspension of the project.
“We hope the project can be completed as soon as possible for the sake of the public and tourists.”
