BERLIN: Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Christina Liew and Chairman of Tourism Malaysia, Datuk Ahmad Shah Hussein Tambakau were actively promoting the 25th World Amateur Golfers Championship (WAGC), World Finals 2019 scheduled to be hosted by Sabah in October this year.
The duo availed themselves of the opportunity to do so at the just-concluded ITB Berlin 2019, here.
“Given that about 400 golfers from 40 countries are expected to participate in this worldclass tournament, it will be yet another platform to promote international tourism in Sabah as the hosting State. It will put Malaysia and Sabah on the global golfing map. More importantly, we would expect the event to spur the local economy by generating economic spinoffs through tourism-related activities for the golfers’ spouses and children,” said Liew who is also Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment.
She has assured Tambakau of some form of sponsorship from her Ministry through the Sabah Tourism Board (STB) in support of Tourism Malaysia.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of Tourism Malaysia said WAGC is a prestigious international amateur golf tournament which has attracted participants from around the world to take up the challenge while representing their respective nations.
According to Tambakau, Tourism Malaysia has been awarded the privilege to cohost the event together with Delta Trend Golf & Leisure Holidays (DTGLH) which is the exclusive rights owner for WAGC (Malaysia). DTGLH has acquired the rights to host this championship until 2020 from World Golf Championships (WGC) Ltd, the governing body for this event.
“We (Tourism Malaysia) have officially endorsed this high-profile tournament,” he added.
