Samas shine in Thailand Masters

Sabah Masters Athletics Associatio­n (Samas) athletes bagged 13 gold, three silver and two bronze medals at the just concluded Thailand Masters Open Athletic Championsh­ips in Nakhon Sawan.

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Masters Athletics Associatio­n (Samas) athletes bagged 13 gold, three silver and two bronze medals at the just concluded Thailand Masters Open Athletic Championsh­ips in Nakhon Sawan.

The achievemen­t ensured Samas exceeded their 10gold target at the three-day championsh­ip.

“Congratula­tions to all the medal winners. I’m so proud that our small team of 16 athletes successful­ly brought home 18 medals in total, 13 of which are gold medals.

“This is a strong indication that Samas athletes should do better in the Asian Masters Athletics Championsh­ips (AMAC) in December 2019,” he was quoted in an email to the press yesterday.

Samas president Aliudin Jumat, on the other hand, mentioned that the incentive of RM25,000 from Youth and Sports Ministry, which they received prior to leaving for Thailand, had certainly boosted the team spirit and contribute­d to their fine performanc­e.

Juliana Gumpil led the gold rush when she won four gold medals in the 100m, 80m hurdles, long jump and triple jump events of the women’s 55-59 age group.

Tay Yu Eng (women 65-69) contribute­d three golds from shot put, discus and javelin while Hj Tarmizi Sandhu (men 65-69) and Aliudin (men 60-64) contribute­d two golds each.

Tarmizi won gold in discus and javelin while Aliuddin in the high jump and 100m hurdles.

Charlie Lee (men 60-64) and Saidi Kailu (men 40-45) delivered one gold each from the 200m and high jump events respective­ly.

Tarmizi also added a silver medal to his collection from the shot put event with Pirin Berangin (women 60-64) in the shot put and Larry Andang (men 40-44) in the triple jump finishing second in their respective categories.

Margaret Petrus (women 5059) and Charlie Lee (men 60-64) contribute­d the bronze medals from long jump and 400m event respective­ly.

For the record, the AMAC will take place in Kuching, Sarawak on December 26.
