Toddler killed in three-vehicle crash
LAHAD DATU: A 19-monthold boy was killed in an accident involving three vehicles at Km 15, Jalan Lahad Datu-Sandakan on Tuesday.
District police chief ACP Nasri Mansor said in a statement yesterday the 3.45pm incident involved three vehicles, namely an express bus, a lorry and an Isuzu D-Max.
Nasri said the deceased, who succumbed to injuries at the scene and trapped inside the vehicle, was a front-seat passenger in the Isuzu D-Max.
Initial investigation at the scene revealed that the incident occurred when the lorry, which was travelling to Lahad Datu from Sandakan, went out of control and skidded into the opposite direction.
In the process, the oncoming Isuzu D-Max crashed into the rear of the lorry, causing the vehicle to spin to the opposite lane and collide with the oncoming express bus.
"The impact of the crash caused the boy to be trapped inside the vehicle and died at the scene," he said, adding that the victim was freed by Fire and Rescue Department personnel.
According to Nasri, the driver of Isuzu D-Max escaped unhurt while the rear passenger of the Isuzu D-Max suffered minor injuries.
Nasri said both drivers of the express bus and the conductor as well as 12 passengers inside the bus escaped unhurt.
He said all the drivers were not drunk, however, their blood samples were taken for test.
He added that the case was being investigated under Section 41(1) of Road Transport Act 1987.
