Two Sabahans to compete in Global Winner contest
KOTA KINABALU: Two Sabahan regional winners will be representing the country at the KGL Contest in English Stage Three to be held in the European Youth Capital of the year, Novi Sad (Serbia), this month.
Chin Yih Thung, regional winner for A2 category, Tawau and Celine Shantini Rajesh Kumar, regional winner for B1 category, Kota Kinabalu, will be attending the three-day event where they will compete against participants from other countries in the Global Winner contest.
The KGL Contest, which is organised by the International Testing Authority and the Institute for the Development of Educational Assessment, assesses participants’ English proficiency across the globe.
It is the fastest growing global competition available for students aged eight to 18 learning English as a foreign language to participate.
With the language assessment format that is aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), KGL Contest motivates the students to improve their English proficiency through this rewarding and exciting contest.
Malaysia was selected as one of the countries to host the KGL Contest this year.
In Sabah, Cambridge English Academy cohosted the contest in Tawau and Kota Kinabalu with a total of 170 contestants participating in Stage 1 on March 3.
The extremely high level of competition saw only 46 contestants making it to Stage 2 which assessed the students’ listening, reading and writing skills.
The results of KGL Contest in English Stage 2 were released on May 11 which saw Chin Yih Thung and Celine Shantini Rajesh Kumar scoring the required marks to secure a place in the finals in Serbia.
A notable achievement was recorded by the 30 participants from Cambridge English Academy who were among the top performers in the CEFR A1, A2, B1 and B2 categories.
From this number, a total of 11 have been ranked as national winners and will be awarded with cash prizes for their achievement.
