KUCHING: The recent meeting between Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg and Council of Eminent Persons chairman Tun Daim Zainuddin did not touch on political matters.

Abang Johari, who is Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) chairman, said the former federal finance minister only expressed his admiration for the state’s economy.

He said Daim was equally impressed with development in the city.

“Nothing. Nothing. Just about the economy,” said the chief minister when asked what transpired at the recent meeting with Daim after he launched the ‘Get Together With The Sikh Community and Vaisakhi 2019’ at the Sikh Temple at Jalan Masjid here yesterday.

Abang Johari said their deliberation at the meeting touched on issues on the economy and nothing political.

Asked if they discussed politics, Abang Johari said: “No.”

Daim paid a courtesy call on the chief minister at the latter’s office at Wisma Bapa Malaysia on Friday.

The visit came to light at the Tuesday meeting between Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and opposition leaders including from GPS where they had allegedly given their support to him to serve a full term as prime minister.

The Friday meeting is believed to have set tongues wagging as Daim is seen as Dr Mahathir’s right hand man.

The retired politician has been entrusted to tackle some of the major issues facing the country such as the renegotiation of the East Coast Rail Line with China.
