The Sarawak government is confident that it has picked the right path in implementing the use of English to teach Science and Mathematics next year, says Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.
He said with English being the lingua franca of trade, information technology and research, the decision by the state to begin the teaching of the two subjects in English for Year 1 pupils next year bodes well for Sarawak in terms of its future human capital.
“We want our kids to be wellversed in terminology at a young age as English is the language of technology, trade and research, and the world is now moving towards digital economy and Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR4.0),” he said when closing the Limbang Education Services Cultural and Sports Festival (PSKPP) championship, here on Sunday.
Awang Tengah said China’s rapid development into a global powerhouse has seen more and more of its people becoming wellversed in the English language in order to help them better communicate with the rest of the world.
“I have just returned from a trip to China and they were speaking flawless English. Not only that, they would use their smartphone to check on the use of a particular word to make sure they can communicate better,” he said.
He added it is important that Sarawak is able to produce intellectually-capable human capital to meet the demands of digital economy and IR4.0, and that using English to teach Science and Mathematics is a good start.
On a separate matter, the deputy chief minister assured that the Sarawak government is working towards repairing and upgrading school infrastructures such as classrooms and teachers’ quarters in Limbang division.
He said the government has taken note of feedback from the respective schools during a lab conducted recently, and has made available the funds needed to roll out the projects according to priority.
He later announced a grant of RM50,000 and a further grant of RM20,000 from Lawas MP Datuk Henry Sum Agong, for PSKPP Limbang, to help them prepare for the state-level PSKPP championship.
Present at annual sports meet were Henry, Limbang Resident Ahmad Denney Ahmad Fauzi, Lawas Education Officer Dr Hassan Hasbollah and his Limbang counterpart Matzinan Wahit, as well as more than 700 athletes and officials.
