Expand use of RORO garbage bins beyond district rating areas

-

Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Jaujan Sambakong wants the use of Roll On Roll Off (RORO) garbage bins to be expanded outside of district rating areas.

Speaking to reporters at the State Legislative Assembly yesterday, Jaujan said that the service is needed not just within district confines but also outside of it.

He said that the amenity can ease the jobs of concessionaires in charge of collecting the garbage as it is more systematic.

He also said that having such amenities outside of district areas or zones can help improve the cleanliness of the areas.

Jaujan cited that in the district of Keningau, some people travel for miles to send the garbage they have accumulated to the nearest RORO bins.

“They travel from Sook and Bingkor. They rather make the journey so that they can ensure the cleanliness of their place,” he said.

Hence, he said the RORO bins should be expanded to the edge of districts.

He also said that the State Government had allocated a sum of money for the supply of these bins and for the construction of more garbage disposal centres for local governments that do not have the financial capacity to prepare such facilities.

“The Tawau Municipal council has strong financial standing and will use RM330,000 derived from its yearly budget to purchase the RORO bins, to fix the bins, to purchase leach bins and to build garbage houses,” he said.

He added that the council now has 32 RORO bins sited within the rating zone.

The price of each RORO bin is RM13,500 per unit.

Jaujan also stressed the need to prepare tables for the sellers at the market in Kundasang.

He said that it is unhealthy for all the farming produce to be laid on the ground where they are susceptible to pollution.

He also said that the vegetable market for Kundasang is now being constructed and is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
