Clothing outlet worker charged with CBT

- By Safrah Mat Salleh

A 47-year-old worker at a clothing outlet in a shopping mall here was charged with criminal breach of trust (CBT) involving RM22,190 of daily sales cash.

Chen Ching Ling pleaded not guilty before Sessions Court judge Noor Hafizah Mohd Salim to the alleged offence which was mentioned for plea yesterday.

She was accused of committing CBT when she was entrusted with banking the money into the company’s account.

The alleged offence took place at the Calvin Klein Jeans in a mall here between July 6 and 11.

She faces a charge under Section 408 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of between one and 14 years and also liable to a fine, upon conviction.

In bail application, counsel Alex Lee, who represented the accused, pleaded for bail on the grounds that Chen, who is a single mother, is the sole breadwinner.

Alex said his client, who has an 11year-old son, had to send the boy to school everyday, however, she could not do so since she was remanded.

He added that Chen is currently living with her mother and has no risk of absconding.

Deputy public prosecutor Nor Faezah Jafry had initially objected to bail, but then proposed the amount at RM10,000 since the court granted it to the accused.

In reply, Alex pleaded for a lower amount at RM5,000 with RM3,000 deposit to be imposed against his client.

The court fixed September 911 this year for trial and imposed RM5,000 bail to be fully deposited with additional condition that the accused has to report at the Manggatal police station twice a month, pending disposal of the case.
