FIH delighted with Japan’s readiness to organise 2020 Olympic Games

The Internatio­nal Hockey Federation (FIH) was extremely pleased with Japan’s readiness to organise the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games following the conclusion of “Ready Steady Tokyo Hockey test event” at the newly-built Oi Hockey Stadium in Tokyo, Wednesday.

FIH President, Thierry Weil said, the stadium had provided outstandin­g facilities which received huge praises from eight competing teams that are taking part in the test event.

“I invite all hockey fans to come and see matches in this venue and I urge them to invite their families and friends to come as well and share their passion,” he was quoted as saying in the statement issued by FIH, yesterday.

Echoing his sentiments were tw oF IH Technical delegatesC­hristian Dec ken brock and Tammy Standley who regarded the tournament ran precisely according to FIH’s internatio­nal standard.

“It has not only been a great tournament with eight fantastic teams but also a perfect opportunit­y to test the pretournam­ent and match protocols and to see what set-up will be in place for the technical team at Tokyo 2020 Olympics Games,” added both individual­s.

Malaysia finished in bottom place out of four teams in the men’s event after being hammered 1-6 by hosts Japan in the third/fourth classifica­tion match, while world number five team, India won the gold medal after whipping world-ranked eight team, New Zealand 5-0 in the final match.

India also won the women’s event title after defeating hosts Japan 2-1 in the final match, while Australia settled for bronze after edging China 3-1 in the third/ fourth classifica­tion match.

Field Hockey is among 56 test events which are being held around Tokyo as Japan’s preparatio­ns to ensure the locations and operation procedures are on the best track before the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. - Bernama
