MAM appoints Alex Yoong as consultant for Team Malaysia

-

The Motorsports Association of Malaysia (MAM) has named former Malaysian Formula One (F1) driver Alex Yoong as the consultant for Team Malaysia at the 2019 FIA Motorsport Games.

According to a statement by MAM yesterday, Alex would be in charge of drivers’ selection, and he is expected to announce the names soon.

The annual Motorsport Games, expected to be held at the Vallelunga Circuit in Italy from Nov 1-3, would see nations compete in six events where the top three finishers would receive a gold, silver and bronze medal, respectively. A final medal table would determine the overall winning nation.

The inaugural Motorsport Games builds upon the successfully trialled GT Nations Cup last year in Bahrain which saw Team Malaysia, run by Axle Motorsport and represented by Zen Low and Mitchell Cheah, finish 8th out of 20 nations in the event.

The six events being contested in this year’s Olympic-style Motorsport Games are GT Cup, Touring Car Cup, Drifting Cup, F4 Cup, Karting Slalom Cup and Digital Cup.

Motorsport has a limited history of nation-based events, and not been held in an official FIA-recognised capacity until the GT Nations Cup last year in Bahrain.

Independent competitions have existed, for example, the A1 Grand Prix series – a series in which Alex participated in – that was billed as the ‘World Cup of Motorsport’, as well as the Nations Cup element of the annual Race of Champions, which has run since 1999. Bernama
