Youth jailed for stabbing drug rehab centre assistant

SIBU: An 18-year-old man who stabbed an assistant of a drug rehabilita­tion centre here earlier this month was sentenced to 17 years and two months in jail by the Sessions Court yesterday.

The accused, Raymond Bakak Kinsing from Permyjaya, Miri pleaded guilty to three charges; robbery, voluntaril­y causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means, and theft of a motor vehicle.

The robbery charge was framed under Section 392/397 of the Penal Code which carries a maximum 14 years’ jail, and shall also be liable to fine or whipping on conviction.

Judge Stella Augustine Druce sentenced the accused to six years’ jail and two strokes of the cane.

The voluntaril­y grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means charge was framed under Section 326 of the Penal Code which carries a maximum 20 years’ jail and also liable to fine or whipping on conviction..

He was sentenced to 10 years’ jail and three strokes of the cane.

Meanwhile, the theft of a motor vehicle charge was framed under Section 379A of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of not less than one year and not more than seven years, and a fine.

The court sentenced him to 14 months’ jail.

All the sentences are to run consecutiv­ely, which he would have to serve at Miri Prison.

Raymond committed the offences between 7.30pm and 8.18pm on Sept 1 at the drug rehabilita­tion centre in Ulu Lanang Road.

According to the fact of case, Raymond stabbed the assistant on his chest with a knife. They were the only persons in the room.

After stabbing the assistant, Raymond asked him ‘Mana dompet, mana dompet?’ (Where is the wallet? where is the wallet).

Afraid that Raymond would become more aggresive, the assistant gave him his wallet. Raymond took the wallet which contained some cash, ID card, and an ATM card. He also took a sling bag containing a bunch of keys.

He left the sling bag at the staircase after he took out the keys.

He then went took assistant’s motorcycle and left the premises with it.

The assistant phoned his colleague to tell him that he had been stabbed before he was later sent to the hospital in an ambulance.

Raymond was stopped by two auxilary policemen at Pos Kawalan Samalaju Industrial Park Bintulu at 11.15am on Sept 2, for acting suspicious­ly.

Upon inspection, the police found a wallet belonging to the victim and a knife in the motorcycle’s basket hidden under a black jacket.

The accused together with the seized itmes were brought to Tanjung Kidurong Police Station.

Meanwhile, in mitigation, Raymond pleaded for leniency, and asked for a minimum jail sentence.

He also told the court that he was only a labourer and wished to see his family before being sent to prison. He also wished to serve his jail sentence in Miri Prison.
