KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Malaysian Drug Prevention Association (Pemadam) West Coast Zone School Anti-Drug Sketch Competition 2019 is key to drug-free schools and Sabah, said Health and People’s Wellbeing Minister, Datuk Frankie Poon Ming Fung.

Poon said the competition not only raised awareness amongst secondary school students but also encouraged constructive practices, the formation of positive camaraderie and unearth hidden talents amongst the students to help them from falling into the pits of drug abuse in the modern world.

He added that efforts such as this complemented the multimillion ringgit government initiatives to prevent, combat, rehabilitate, and control the society’s scourge.

Therefore, Poon urged not only government departments and agencies but also religious, women and youth NGOs and the people to be more proactive in helping to achieve a drug-free Sabah and Malaysia by 2020.

“I have been made to understand that the methods used to deal with social illness are through staging of competitions where the main focus given are related to drug abuse issues and various related issues,” he said when officiating the Pemadam West Coast Zone School Anti-Drug Sketch Competition 2019 at the National Department for Culture and Arts (JKKN) Sabah auditorium here yesterday.

“This theatre competition is also a platform for students to spend their leisure time by creating and acting. Besides that, it also provides students with the opportunity to get to know their friends from different schools and to support Pemadam’s efforts in the fight against drugs as the world’s number one enemy.
