Motorcycli­st killed in collision with vehicle

TAWAU: A motorcycli­st was killed after colliding with a Toyota Hilux four-wheel drive vehicle at Kampung Jagung, Merotai-Bombalai Road about 10pm on Saturday night.

Tawau police chief ACP Peter Ak Umbuas said Jeluing Anak Apau, 48, from Kampung Iban Merotai Besar was riding his bike without turning on the headlights. He died at the scene.

Peter said the 58-year-old driver of the Toyota Hilux, who escaped unhurt, was on his way home to Amber Park. After overtaking a vehicle and as he was about to move back to his lane, a motorcycle suddenly appeared in front of his vehicle and due to the close proximity, he was unable to avoid the collision.

According to Peter, based on their investigat­ion and the statement from a witness at the scene, it was establishe­d that the mishap was caused by the motorcycli­st who rode his bike without lights.

The case is being investigat­ed under Section 41 (1)(A) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
