149kg rubbish collected from Labuan beach

LABUAN: JCI Labuan successful­ly completed the World Cleanup Day last Saturday with more than 500 participan­ts cleaned up Tanjung Purun Beach. A total of 149kg of rubbish was collected.

The event set up 5Rs (Recycle, Reduce, Refuse, Reuse, Rot) booths on waste management. A children colouring contest was also held simultaneo­usly to create environmen­tal awareness amongst the general public at Labuan Internatio­nal Sea Sports Complex.

According to the event organising chairperso­n, Caris Teo, JCI Labuan is focusing more on creating environmen­tal awareness this year and also targeting children to instil good waste management practice at a young age.

Invited speaker from the Fisheries Department and environmen­talist Dato Dr Dionysius Sharma shared his knowledge on the importance of preserving the environmen­t. Young children were also engaged in question and answer sessions to indirectly sow awareness seeds into them.

Public were invited to bring recyclable wastes collected and sorted at home to the recycle booth set up by Tzu Chi Foundation. With the help from Leo Club of UMSKAL, Lions Club Labuan Host and public, a total of 760kg paper products, 3.8kg of aluminium cans, 8.4kg of steel cans, and 4kg of plastic bottles were collected.
