American tourist knocked down while crossing road, dies

KUCHING: An American tourist was killed while his wife suffered a broken finger after they were knocked down while crossing Jalan Padungan, here yesterday.

Sarawak Traffic Investigat­ion and Enforcemen­t Department head Supt Alexson Naga Chabu who confirmed the matter said Mark Sigmund Neustadt, 62, and his 48-year-old wife were crossing the road near a petrol station when they were hit by a multipurpo­se vehicle driven by a 26year-old man.

“Both victims were sent to Sarawak General Hospital where Mark succumbed to serious head injuries at 1.54am.

“His wife, also an American citizen, was transferre­d to a private hospital where she is currently warded for a fractured right thumb. She is still traumatise­d by what had happened,” he said.

Alexson added the driver, from Taman Malihah, Jalan Matang here, was not injured in the incident.

Police are investigat­ing the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
