UCSF overall champions of MASISWA Games

KOTA KINABALU: University College Sabah Foundation (UCSF) emerged as overall champions in the Sabah Zone MASISWA Games that ended at the Kota Kinabalu Sports Complex in Likas yesterday.

The victory did not come easy for defending overall champions UCSF as they were made to fight hard before edging SIDMA College for the overall title.

UCSF bagged four gold and one silver medals to finish top of the multi-sport event gathering of all the private higher learning institutio­ns (IPTS) in the state.

The gold medals were won in the chess competitio­n where Jennica Fas Jossly claimed the Women’s Individual gold before adding a second through the Women’s Team event.

UCSF also won two gold medals in the tenpin bowling event with top placed finishing in the Men’s Individual as well as the Mixed Team event.

However, the tie-breaker was certainly in the netball event where UCSF claimed a silver medal that proved to be crucial in the final count of the overall medal standing.

SIDMA College also won four gold medals but with only an additional bronze medal to their total haul, they were forced to settle for second overall.

SIDMA College won gold medals in Women’s futsal, Women’s volleyball, netball and Men’s badminton singles (Andree Chin Yi Thsung) while the bronze medal was from Amiley Mark Lee and Maxelvin Berimbun in the Men’s badminton doubles.

North Borneo University College (NBUC) finished third overall with two gold, three silver and four bronze medals.

Tunku Abdul Rahman University College won two gold, two silver and one bronze medals while Kolej Teknikal Yayasan Sabah won one gold, two silver and two bronze medals completed the top five participat­ing teams.

Nine sports namely tenpin bowling, badminton, chess, futsal, netball, volleyball and sepak takraw as well as the newly introduced E-Sports (Mobile Legends) and Aerodance competitio­ns.

Around 1,100 athletes from 19 particapat­ing IPTS took part in the MASISWA Games hosted by Asia Metropolit­an College Kota Kinabalu (AMC KK).

NBUC will play host to the MASISWA Games Sabah Zone in 2020.

Henry Shim, the political secretary to the Youth and Sports Minister Phoong Jin Zhe, represente­d the minister at the prize presentati­on and closing ceremony.

Also present were Minda Global Berhad Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) Naresh Alagan, AMC Kota Kinabalu Chief Executive Kristy Ng Sze Nee, president of Sabah Youth Council Ahmad Farid Sainuri, founder of ESport Community Sabah Mohd Azhar Ramili and all the chief executives of the competing institutio­ns.
