Bung’s son accused of defaming former SMC president
SANDAKAN: Kinabatangan Umno Youth chief Mohd Kurniawan Naim Moktar was yesterday accused of defaming the former president of Sandakan Municipal Council (SMC) Datuk Peter Hii Chang Lik at a Magistrate’s court here.
Mohd Kurniawan, who was represented by Rizwandean Bukhari M. Borhan and Mohd Reduan Aklee, claimed trial to defaming Peter Hii under Section 500 of the Penal Code.
Magistrate Sulaila Selag then allowed the release of the accused with RM3,500 bail in one local surety, and set November 22, this year for pre-trial case management. According to the charge, on February 21, 2019, around 10.45am at Sandakan police station, the accused had allegedly slander Hu Chan Lik @ Hii Chang Lik (Datuk Peter Hii) in a police report.
The police report allegedly contained four slanders, including that Hii had approved a trading licence under his own name; Hii appointed people several positions in SMC without approval of the Ministry of Local Government and Housing; Hii was rude to SMC personnel and had bullied the personnel working under him; Hii discriminated SMC personnel and was racist when it comes to task assignments and role in the department.
The offence of defamation carries a maximum punishment of two years imprisonment or with fine or with both, if found guilty.
The case was prosecuted by Deputy Public Prosecutor, Mark Kenneth Ne o.
The accused, Mohd Kurniawan is also the son of Kinabatangan Member of Parliament cum UMNO Sabah Chairman, Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin.
