Bung’s son ac­cused of de­fam­ing for­mer SMC pres­i­dent

SAN­DAKAN: Kin­abatan­gan Umno Youth chief Mohd Kur­ni­awan Naim Mok­tar was yes­ter­day ac­cused of de­fam­ing the for­mer pres­i­dent of San­dakan Mu­nic­i­pal Coun­cil (SMC) Datuk Peter Hii Chang Lik at a Mag­is­trate’s court here.

Mohd Kur­ni­awan, who was rep­re­sented by Rizwan­dean Bukhari M. Borhan and Mohd Re­d­uan Ak­lee, claimed trial to de­fam­ing Peter Hii un­der Sec­tion 500 of the Pe­nal Code.

Mag­is­trate Su­laila Se­lag then al­lowed the re­lease of the ac­cused with RM3,500 bail in one lo­cal surety, and set Novem­ber 22, this year for pre-trial case man­age­ment. Ac­cord­ing to the charge, on Fe­bru­ary 21, 2019, around 10.45am at San­dakan po­lice sta­tion, the ac­cused had al­legedly slan­der Hu Chan Lik @ Hii Chang Lik (Datuk Peter Hii) in a po­lice re­port.

The po­lice re­port al­legedly con­tained four slan­ders, in­clud­ing that Hii had ap­proved a trad­ing li­cence un­der his own name; Hii ap­pointed peo­ple sev­eral po­si­tions in SMC without ap­proval of the Min­istry of Lo­cal Gov­ern­ment and Hous­ing; Hii was rude to SMC per­son­nel and had bul­lied the per­son­nel work­ing un­der him; Hii dis­crim­i­nated SMC per­son­nel and was racist when it comes to task as­sign­ments and role in the de­part­ment.

The of­fence of defama­tion car­ries a max­i­mum pun­ish­ment of two years im­pris­on­ment or with fine or with both, if found guilty.

The case was pros­e­cuted by Deputy Pub­lic Pros­e­cu­tor, Mark Ken­neth Ne o.

The ac­cused, Mohd Kur­ni­awan is also the son of Kin­abatan­gan Mem­ber of Par­lia­ment cum UMNO Sabah Chair­man, Datuk Seri Bung Mok­tar Radin.
